Disinfection is the process by which the destruction of pathogenic microorganisms by chemicals or natural methods is achieved on objects, tools and surfaces. DISINFECTION is carried out after meticulous cleaning, with the aim of destroying usually most or all of the pathogens. Some microorganisms are easier to get rid of, although the mode of action changes with different disinfectants. In general, bacteria and some viruses are easier to treat, while fungi, bacterial seeds and other viruses are more difficult. STERILIZATION is defined as the destruction by physical or chemical means of all microorganisms, including the seeds of microbes. Disinfection differs from sterilization in that it makes an object largely, and not completely, free of contaminants. The role of the DISINFECTION application is the reduction to acceptable levels of the microbial load and is achieved with modern methods and formulations approved by the AEO. A chemical is called “disinfectant” only when the germs through the disinfectant are reduced by 5 log units (for viruses by 4 log units).
Disinfection is considered necessary to maintain hygiene and prevent the transmission of infectious diseases, especially in areas of increased synergy, such as schools, hospitals, hotels, public transport, etc. The application is done either by spraying with a low pressure pump to cover specific surfaces or by nebulizing for total coverage of closed spaces. By the word surface we mean a very general terminology. In a home the word “surface” can include from the furniture in the living room, to the tables, sinks, floors, etc. In a health care environment e.g. a clinic, may include patient rooms, walls, medical equipment, etc. Germs lurk everywhere because they colonize all of these surfaces through the air or are carried through contaminated objects. In a hospital, for example, all surfaces should be systematically disinfected to prevent the transmission of diseases and infections. At home now, if contagious diseases occur, for the safety of our babies or pets, we should contact specialists immediately. The same applies to the office where we coexist with colleagues and germs can be transmitted through handshakes, but also in common areas such as knobs, elevators, etc. Compatibility with the surface to be disinfected is a key criterion for choosing the disinfectant factor. Other substances are selected to disinfect the floor and others to disinfect the hands.
